Northern Michigan mink and muskrat trapping By Herbert Lenon My reason for writing this article in the manner that it will be written is to give advise to the trapper, both amateur and semiprofessional, who have previously trapped only in the southern part of Michigan and then come to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with the expectations of great catches of mink and rats, thinking that up here the woods are alive with furs. I have trapped over most of the Eastern part of Northern Michigan for the past many years, and before coming here I trapped the central part...

Coyote trapping on a river, River Trapping in a Boat -

I use a small boat or canoe to trap rivers in Michigan until about the middle of December.  Years ago while I was living in the U.P. I floated a small river in a canoe with a friend named Rick in January.  Rick had never checked traps before and while we were snowshoe rabbit hunting with my father, he talked me into checking my river line one more time in January.  So we set out on a cold clear morning floating the Sturgeon River on a day trip.  Well this was before the internet and reliable weather forecast.  All was good and memory has us catching a good number of beaver before it got real cold, windy and snowy.  The first stretch of river was rocky and shallow with a fast current, but as we approached the wider and slower moving section half way through our trip, the river began to ice over.

Scent post sets lured with Lenon’s Fox or Coyote Nature Call Lure are extremely effective on a winter trapline.  During the summer time, I will burn several posts out of 2 x 2 pine two feet tall for using on my winter line.   One can also use high tuft of grass, wood stump or other natural protruding item for a scent post set.   It gives a lot of eye appeal and when lured with Nature Call is extremely deadly.  Conceal your trap same as in the trail set.  Mating season occurs in late winter and marking of territory is in overdrive by fox and coyote.

Asa Lenon Weasel Catch, Lenon Weasel Lure, Lenon Weasel Super All Call Lure -

Picture of Asa and and his Brother Herb Lenon many years ago with fine mess of weasel using Lenon's Weasel Super All Call developed by their dad in the 1920's

Weighing in at between 1 and 2 ounces the Least Weasel is the smallest of Michigan’s Furbearing Animals.  And just a tad heaver we have a full grown Ermine weighting up to a whopping 4 ounces and measuring up to 12 inches long.  Both are referred to as weasels by trappers, but obviously the Ermine is more sought after and at times brings a decent price.  In todays market one would be better off finding a taxidermist or crafter that wanted the weasel pelts.  The Weasel is found throughout Michigan’s forest, fields and water edges.

Tax deductions for trappers and hunters -

If you’re like me, you are going to continue to trap whether you make or lose money. The tax laws were set up to collect taxes from profitable business and provide relief for those that lose money. Usually a business venture does not show much profit the first few years and the tax system allows the new venture a chance to get started. Likewise, most new trappers will not recoup their investment in trapping supplies in their first couple of years on the line. However, in the trapping industry we experienced a decline in the amount of revenue we take in from furs, while the prices for traps and trapping supplies have continued to increase.
