Recommended Size Traps for Mink & Muskrat Trapping

2024 Tobyn Slater Muskrat caught using Lenon's Muskrat Super All Call Lure

Mink and Muskrat Traps are available in Body Grip Traps, Coil Spring Traps, Long Spring Traps and Under Spring Jump Traps by a number of different manufactures.   Colony Muskrat Traps are a species specific trap designed for catching muskrat but will also catch mink.  I still use my old long spring and under spring jump traps while muskrat and mink  trapping and for a current buyer of traps they are an alternative and available on the used trap market and on ebay.

I have used all of the following manufactures traps Bridger Traps, and Duke Traps.  On the used muskrat and mink traps I prefer Blake & Lamb Number 1 1/2 long spring and Number 1 1/2 Underspring Jump Traps for both muskrat traps and mink traps and all can be found on Ebay.  The 1 1/2 long spring traps have the weight necessary to quickly and humanely drown a mink or muskrat, while one can easily and safely set the trap while in the water trapping.

When picking the size of coil spring traps, long spring and under spring jump traps to use for muskrat and mink trapping a number of variables come in to play.

1.) If trapping shallow water one should use the number 1 or 1.5 guard type traps or 110 Single Spring, 120 Double Spring, 150 Single Spring & 160 Double Spring size body grip traps for mink and muskrat.  The muskrat and mink will twist their foot off if not using the body grip or guard type traps in shallow water.  In deep water one makes a set were the mink or muskrat will quickly drown.

2.) Double jaw traps are available and help hold both the mink and muskrat.

3.) You have to decide if you want closed jaw or offset jaws.  I see no option but closed jaws and as mentioned in two double jaw even better.

4.) Most coil spring traps are available with 2 coils or 4 coils.   No reason for a 4 coil mink and muskrat trap.

5.) Tomahawk Colony Muskrat Cage Traps makes a quality two door model.  One just has to find a den entrance or narrow muskrat run an place the trap.   Make sure the trap is covered by water and the repeating trap can and usually does catch more than one muskrat at a time.

5.) Every State has trapping regulations and it is your responsibility to make sure you are using a trap legal in your state.

One of my favorite Mink and Muskrat traps is the Bridger 150 Single Spring Body Grip trap while trapping mink and muskrat in Michigan.  The single spring is easy to set and the larger size fits wider runs and many time you can catch a raccoon in the Bridger 150 Body Grip.
