Recommended Sized Traps for Raccoon Trapping

Raccoon  Traps are available in Dog Proof Raccoon Traps, Live Cage Raccoon Traps, Body Grip Raccoon Traps Raccoon Coil Spring Traps, Long Spring Traps and Under Spring Traps by a number of different manufactures.  Most foothold traps manufactured for raccoon trapping today are the Coil Spring and long spring type traps.  I still use my old long spring and under spring jump traps while raccoon trapping and for a current buyer of traps they are an alternative and available on the used trap market and on ebay.

I have used all of the following manufactures traps Bridger Traps, and Duke Traps.  There are several other manufactures of Raccoon Traps and I have not used them but heard they all will do the job.  On the used traps I prefer old style double jaw double spring long spring traps for trapping the raccoon.

When picking the size of dog proof raccoon trap, live raccoon cage trap, body grip raccoon traps, coil spring foothold raccoon traps, long spring foothold raccoon traps and under spring jump traps to use for raccoon trapping a number of variables come in to play.

1.) The dog proof raccoon traps are a great choice as they are species specific and tend to mostly catch raccoon, opossum and skunk.  If trapping around residential areas when should use a sweet bait so house cats will not be attracted to the dog proof raccoon traps.   It is my personal preference to use pull type dog proof raccoon traps.

2.) Closed Jaw Traps are the only recommended by my experience and at times I have held both a raccoon by just a toe which would have got out of a offset type trap.  This is while have a drowner set at a water type set. If you are going to target raccoon on dry land try to use double jaw traps which are available in long spring and coil spring traps.

3.) Most coil spring traps are available with 2 coils or 4 coils.   It is my experience that 2 coil traps are more than enough in strength for raccoon trapping.  Also if they weaken from years of use one can turn them into 4 coil traps and they will be strong enough again.

5.) Every State has trapping regulations and it is your responsibility to make sure you are using a trap legal in your state.

One of my favorite traps is the PCS Feather Light Raccoon Dog Proof Trap while trapping Raccoon in Michigan.
