Recommended Traps for Red Fox & Grey Fox Trapping
Recommended Sized Traps for Red Fox & Grey Fox Trapping
Nice Winter Red Fox trapped by Elijah Beuck Michigan using Lenon's Fox Super All Call Lure
Red and Grey Fox Traps are available in Coil Spring Traps, Long Spring Traps and Under Spring Traps "Jump Traps" by a number of different manufactures. Most foothold traps manufactured for red fox and grey fox trapping today are the Coil Spring type traps. I still use my old long spring and under spring jump traps while fox trapping and for a current buyer of traps they are an alternative and available on the used trap market and on ebay.
I have used all of the following manufactures traps Minnesota Brand Traps, Bridger Traps, and Duke Traps. On the used traps I prefer Blake & Lamb Number 2 Long spring and Number 2 Underspring Jump Traps all can be found on Ebay
When picking the size of coil spring traps, long spring and under spring jump traps to use for red fox and grey fox trapping a number of variables come in to play.
1.) Temperature if you are trapping with above freezing conditions I use a number 1.5 size trap for red fox and grey fox trapping. A 1.5 Trap is ideal and will hold a coyote and bobcat if you catch one. Use Number 2 and 550's if freezing conditions.
I trapped this beautiful coyote using a 1.5 Coil Spring Trap intended for a Red Fox. Make sure when fox trapping with 1.5 traps you use an anchor that will hold a coyote or bobcat. Future settings armed this super location with an MB 550 Closed Jar and the set produced many Foxes, Coyotes and a nice bobcat.
2.) If many coyote and bobcat in the area I use the larger Number 2, 550 and 3 traps.
3.) You have to decide if you want closed jaw or offset jaws. Most coil spring traps will offer you both. Normally I like offset jaws with the gap between the jaws; however on the MB-550 with the cast jaws I prefer the closed jaw for red and grey fox trapping.
4.) Most coil spring traps are available with 2 coils or 4 coils. It is my experience that 2 coil traps are more than enough in strength for fox and coyote trapping. Also if they weaken from years of use one can turn them into 4 coil traps and they will be strong enough again.
5.) Every State has trapping regulations and it is your responsibility to make sure you are using a trap legal in your state.
One of my favorite traps is the MB-550 Closed Jaw Trap while trapping red grey fox in Michigan. I usually start trapping in late November when the pelts are prime and temps tend to be freezing at night.
