Hand & Mechine Sanding
Always use a sanding block where possible, this will assist in maintaining a flat surface to allow the removal of high spots like old paint drips.
When sanding without a block, fold a sheet in half lengthwise, then fold it again into thirds. This will provide a palm size pad.
Wet Sanding
